Goodwill Southern California had a one-of-a-kind sale last Sunday in which they sold rare vintage items at substantially discounted prices for their customers. The one-day shopping event started with a line of over 500 people before the store opened its doors to the masses at 9 a.m.

“It essentially was a once in a lifetime sale, because we took the bulk of a collection that have been curated over the past 100 years--ever since Goodwill has been established in California,” said Sasha Itzikman, vice president for marketing and community relations of Goodwill. “We made those available to the public for the very first time, so once they’re sold the items are gone,” said Itzikman.

The pieces sold were collected from donations at their Los Angeles campus. Overall, the event had customers upwards of about 1,800 people total. “We did exceptionally well in exceeding our expectations,” said Itzikman. The money raised from the event will all go back to their no-cost programs and help job seekers with barriers as well as other programs Goodwill funds.

The event took up a lot of the staff’s effort and teamwork to pull off. “Everybody down to the retail and security team got involved,” said Itzikman. “It was essentially going to be a pop-up store, but we ended up pulling lots of hands from our retail team to help install the collection and operate the sale the day of,” Itzikman. Overall, Itzikman believes the sale to have been a success. She stated that the coverage of the event included fashion bloggers, calendar listings, as well as in fashion news outlets.

In the future, Goodwill hopes to do a similar type of sale if possible. “Looking forward, we will certainly look for a vintage type of sale, but it won’t be quite the same,” said Itzikman. The main event made shopping the store’s vintage finds very easy and accessible for the one day, but Itzikman states there are unique pieces at their stores all of the time.

This Saturday, Goodwill will host another first-of-its-kind sale for the company. Goodwill Southern California will be having their first prom sale promoting affordable fashion for high school students for their prom.
