Green America awards U.S. companies for responsible fashion

Recently, three U.S. green apparel businesses were recognized for their efforts in sustainable, ethical clothing. Based in New York, Arizona and Wisconsin, the companies were awarded with the “People & Planet Award” from Green America as well as a 5,000 dollars cash prize.

The three U.S. businesses won the award for various reasons, spanning from ethical clothing, improvements in social society, and fair treatments of workers. The winners lists include: Themis and Thread of Hector, NY; Fed by Threads of Tuscon, AZ; and Fair Indigo of Madison, WI. “We at Green America applaud these small business for their work to help people and the planet with each garment they produce,” Green America’s executive co-director Fran Teplitz said in a statement.

New York-based Themis and Thread uses clothing that has a minimal effect on the community, offering customizable apparel. The apparel company also exclusive uses materials made in America, including organic cotton and recycled materials. One of the other winners, Fed by Threads positively affects the environment through organic, American-made “Supply Chain Aware” clothing. This apparel brand also offers customizable options and carries only responsibly certified products. The company also contributes to feeding the hungry through using some of their profits to provide emergency meals. Wisconsin-based company Fair Indigo also uses responsible, ethical materials for its garments, including organic cotton and Oeko-tex certified dyes. This company was recognized for its fair treatment of workers as well as its ethical apparel.

Green American awarded these businesses the “People & Planet Award” to show that they have made great strides in the area of going green in the fashion business. The three apparel business proved they earned the award through their past and continuous initiatives to move forward with sustainable, environmentally responsible options.
