Los Angeles - Trendy e-tailer Nasty Gal recently collaborated with Los Angeles’ primary fashion school Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). The collaborative academic effort allowed students to have a first hand look on how the merchandising product development process works in the fashion industry.

The school worked with Nasty Gal for a classification and line development class that was open to students who attended last quarter. The idea was to take students through the entire development process for a company’s clothing line. In this case, FIDM chose Nasty Gal as their retailer to help guide students through the arduous tasks that come from developing a line. “We really wanted them to work as the Nasty Gal design team worked [together] and create a collection for the [customer],” said Sarah Wilkinson, vice president of design for Nasty Gal in their Industry Collaboration video. The staff members worked to create an environment that let students feel that they were truly a part of the design team. Elizabeth Burke, merchandise product development student of FIDM, stated that she got feedback from the designers and that she regularly got to meet with parts of the team. “[It] was so helpful and insightful,” said Burke. The program’s purpose was to help students learn through working at the downtown Los Angeles office of Nasty Gal.

Nasty Gal has been a professional e-commerce business since its establishment in 2006. Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal, created the company with curated apparel, shoes, and accessories for the modern, urban woman. Currently, the company operates with over 550,000 customers spread over 60 countries. The brand became prosperous originally through its e-commerce site, but has opened a couple of brick-and-mortar locations recently. The brand has a Nasty Gal store opened on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles currently, where the brand’s headquarters are also located.
