In addition to being one of the most iconic department stores in America, as well as planning their arrival to the New York fashion scene in 2018, Nordstrom is also committed to social change. On March 9th the retailer will be launching Nordstrom + Piece & Co., a collaboration of accessories and apparel done in conjunction with some of the most beloved American brands, including Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Alice + Olivia, Current/Elliot, Theory, The Honest Company, and Rebecca Minkoff. Piece & Co. was founded in 2011 by Kathleen Wright in an attempt to tackle global poverty, especially for women, by providing sustainable job opportunities to female artisans.

Each brand worked with Piece & Co. to source handmade fabrics from countries like India, Vietnam, Zambia, and Mexico. The end result was a collection of tops, skirts, dresses, shorts, and handbags. What’s better than knowing that your latest designer purchase is also going to combat global poverty. The proof is in the pudding, because thanks to Piece & Co. thousands of jobs have been created in over 30 countries. Most of these jobs were created through sourcing fabrics from co-ops where techniques such as ikat, tie-dye, and batik printing are used.

Nordstrom collaborates with Piece & Co. for fashion conscience collection

Each season, Piece & Co. will present designers with a collection of fabrics created by these artisan women all around the globe. From there, the designs are then customized based on what the designers want. Wright is hoping that the affects of being in Nordstrom will help further Piece & Co.’s mission to end global poverty, as there is no greater exposure than being in one of America’s top department stores. “We’ve all seen how much traction we can get. The impact of being in Nordstrom will resonate and become bigger,” founder Kathleen Wright was quoted saying in Women’s Wear Daily.

For those hoping to get their hands on these fashion-with-a-conscience pieces you will have a very limited window of opportunity, but a wide variety of stores to shop at. The collection will be made available for four weeks in 35 Nordstrom stores, as well as Nordstrom.com for those e-commerce lovers. It’s quite a collection as well, with items including scarves from The Honest Company priced at 59.95 dollars to Tory Burch jackets priced at 495 dollars. It falls into the realm of more affordable luxury, and if there was ever a good a time as any to get your next investment piece it would be now while you know your designer purchase is going towards a good cause.

Nordstrom will be going all out for this collaboration as well. Each Piece & Co. collaboration piece will have a tag that explains the genesis of the project, and each floor will have a centrally located mannequin decked out in Nordstrom + Piece & Co. collaboration clothing. Whoever said making a difference to the world couldn’t also be absolutely glamorous should really head over to Nordstrom for this collection. And remember, when you are in that long line for that new Diane von Furstenburg wrap dress made from hand-printed indigo batik at the end of that line you are not only expanding your wardrobe, but helping to give a woman in a developing country a job.
