Based out of Los Angeles, Sav Noir is not a brand that resides in comfortable, safe choices. The Spring/Summer 2017 collection proves that its designer, Edwin Hayes, created this collection with a unique vision on metallic, punk-inspired fashion.

The show took place in downtown Los Angeles in the midst of the fashion district. Located on the Lazarus Experience’s rooftop, the SS17 debuted with a slew of glitter-emblazoned models. Incorporating various elements of punk with a bit of contemporary and Los Angeles edge, the pieces perfectly reflected the designer’s vision. “The collection is based on trying to bring glam and punk together, that’s just a little bit of me,” said Hayes of the runway show. With the idea of appealing to the music industry crowd, Hayes’ aesthetic proves the versatile, cool element of this collection. “Just imagine a band that just got finished playing and had a huge show; everyone [at the] after party would be wearing one of these pieces.”

The collection consisted of both menswear and womenswear, with models of both sexes walking the runway. Sav Noir’s use of sheer, patent shoes, and black flower-embossed prints was evident throughout the pieces. Although the looks were edgy, the fabrics were flowy and subtle on the runway. Buttons were prevalent throughout the collection including black button-downs as well as jeans with buttons all down the sides. There were also recurring geometric patterns in silver and salmon over the black pants as well as some of the tops. With chunky and silver jewelry to accompany the pieces, the collection showed off a very fashion-forward take on lax, machina fashion.

This is one of the first times where Sav Noir has ventured out in using pops of color. “[It’s] sort of different and out of my comfort zone,” he said. The collection showed off a very limited color palette consisting mostly of midnight black and metallic silver. Very few pieces included a pink, salmon colored element with the exception of one sparkly blazer, which was completely pink. With thigh-highs and fishnet elements, the collection consisted of mostly black pieces, aside from those pop pieces.

In doing the collection, Hayes hopes that Los Angeles will take a hint in adventurous fashion, as he feels sometimes the city can play it safe. “There are certain designs that people are really comfortable with and get stuck with, rather than take chances,” he said. As his collection shows of a different take on fashion by incorporating grunge pieces, he seems to be headed in a different direction. “I’m all about taking chances and thinking outside of the box,” he said.

The collection is available between the price range of approximately 400 to 1,200 dollars. Due to the high-quality of fabrics including lambskin, embossing details, and metallics; the price point for the collection is higher than Sav Noir’s normal collection which ranges from approximately 80 to 340 dollars.

Founded in 2010, the brand first started as streetwear selling t-shirts. However, since then, Hayes has been able to grow forward and develop Sav Noir into a more high-end direction. Not afraid to go all out in his collections, Hayes shows off a daring, original side of fashion with his SS17 collection. In growing as a designer, it seems that Hayes is up to the challenge of this city’s fashion industry. “I would like to be one of the designers that inspires L.A. to get out of its comfort zone,” he said.
