Terrell Owens, a holder of numerous National Football League records, may have been off the field for a while, but he has found something to keep himself busy. The former NFL wide receiver is debuting his athleisure line, Prototype 81, at the MRket tradeshow at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City today.
Owens will be introducing the line to attendees with a live model presentation in the shows Move section, an area of MRket where trade shows partner with Equinox to showcase active lifestyle brands. Owens has been teasing the line for over a year with posts on social media accounts, including his Instagram and on YouTube channels.
“I came up with the name about a year ago,” Owens said to WWD. “When I got out of college, people called me a prototypical type of receiver. So I added my number to the end and came up with Prototype81 — and you can’t spell prototype without ‘TO.'" TO being a reference to the athlete's nickname
Prototype 81 fills an interesting space in the fashion market as a luxury sports lifestyle brand. Apparel items offered include shorts, long and short-sleeve t-shirts, cropped tops, and leggings for men. The styling of the line is meant to be both streetwear and and gym friendly.
The average retail price point for the collection will be 90 dollars.
While Owens is still working on the retail distribution strategy, he hopes to partner with 81 retailers within the next year.
