Condé Nast has named Jessica Cruel the new editor-in-chief of Allure. She succeeds Michelle Lee who departed the company and magazine for a role at Netflix. Cruel was previously Allure’s content director, and led The Melanin Edit, an Allure platform aimed at Black women focused on beauty, health, and wellness.

“I am so thrilled that Jessica is Allure’s new editor-in-chief,” said Anna Wintour, global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer of Condé Nast, in a statement. “It is no small feat to follow in Michelle Lee’s footsteps, but I have no doubt that Jessica can do just that — she is a natural leader and a brilliant journalist, and she exudes a positive energy that is felt by all those lucky enough to work with her.”

Cruel will step into her new role on September 8. Her resume also includes roles at Refinery29, Self, PopSugar, and New York Magazine.
