David's Bridal taps Nike veteran Kathy Cherian as CFO: 'It's a business model transformation'

US bridal retailer David's Bridal has appointed Kathy Cherian as chief financial officer. The company is bringing in the former Nike Canada CFO as it moves from building its technology-led business to scaling it.

Cherian joins from lifestyle brand Magnolia, where she most recently served as CFO. She has more than 20 years of experience across consumer, retail and multichannel businesses. At Nike she led global business planning, and as CFO of Nike Canada she delivered five consecutive years of double-digit revenue and EBITDA growth, according to David's Bridal.

"I've spent much of my career working at points of change, whether scaling businesses, evolving business models, allocating capital across competing opportunities or building the financial infrastructure that allows growth to happen responsibly," Cherian told FashionUnited. "David's Bridal is at exactly that kind of inflection point, and that made the opportunity especially compelling to me."

The appointment follows 18 months in which David's Bridal has repositioned itself from a traditional bridal retailer. The company now describes itself as a technology-enabled ecosystem spanning AI, commerce, marketplaces, media and B2B, and it recently launched Pearl Connect. The company says Cherian will bring financial and operational rigour to that growth and help scale new, asset-light revenue streams.

Lessons from Nike and Magnolia

Cherian said her work at Nike across stores, digital and wholesale shaped decisions on inventory, pricing, partner economics and investment. "Those lessons are highly relevant to David's Bridal because this isn't simply a finance transformation. It's a business model transformation, and finance needs to understand the customer, the business and the economics behind that transformation."

At founder-led Magnolia, she learned how a brand can operate across several businesses without losing the customer relationship that gives them their value. "When several businesses sit under one brand, each can have very different economics, even though the customer experiences them as part of the same company," she said.

Measuring a multi-business model

As David's Bridal expands beyond traditional retail, Cherian said finance will need visibility into the economics of each business. "A store, a marketplace and a media business don't behave the same way financially and shouldn't be evaluated as if they do."

Cherian said the larger opportunity lies in how the company's AI, marketplace, media and B2B operations connect. "Individually, each of these businesses is interesting, but the bigger opportunity is when the pieces strengthen the same customer relationship rather than operating as disconnected ventures."

The CFO named three measures of success for her first year at David's Bridal. The first is a healthy core business with strong cash and operating discipline. The second is clearer economics for the company's growth businesses, and the third is a finance team that the rest of the organisation sees as a partner.

'We're building what comes next'

Chief executive officer Kelly Cook, who took the top job in April 2025, said the company is now focused on scaling what it has built. "Kathy brings a rare, powerhouse combination: big-company muscle, an entrepreneurial spirit, and total hands-on operating discipline. She knows how to deploy capital behind big growth, build the infrastructure required to support scale, and ensure the economics deliver real value as the business evolves," the CEO told FashionUnited.

Cook pointed to Cherian's role at Nike in more than 10 billion dollars of strategic investments in North America, as well as the financial framework behind Nike's Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy. She also cited Cherian's work at Magnolia across retail, e-commerce, media, hospitality and consumer products. "That combination is spot-on for us because David's is no longer a single-channel dress shop."

Cook said the decision to hire from outside bridal was deliberate. "We're not trying to build the David's Bridal of yesterday; we're building what comes next," she said. "To lead a transformation like that, you need leaders who bring fresh, cross-industry perspectives and aren't afraid to break the old playbook."
