American outdoor retailer REI has announced the appointment of Michael Benkel as its new Vice President of Planning, Inventory and Solutions. He will oversee the brand’s planning and inventory management strategy, as well as its merchandising business processes, leading a team of over 100 professionals.

“I’m thrilled to join REI and weave my enthusiasm for the outdoors with my passion for retail, to support the co-op’s important purpose to get people outside and support sustainability”, said Benkel in a statement. Best known for its #GetOutside campaign, REI is organized as a consumer’s co-operative. It sells sportswear, sporting goods, camping gear and travel equipment in 154 stores across the United States.

Prior to joining REI, Benkel worked as Vice President of Planning, Allocation and Global Supply Chain at Pier 1 Imports. He’s also held senior positions at Pottery Barn and worked as a buyer for Macy’s. “His skills and experiences are a great combination for the co-op, and his leadership will be crucial in making sure our customers and members get the quality gear they need to enjoy the outdoors”, said Susan Viscoon, REI’s Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Co-op Brands in the same statement.
