Sustainable footwear brand Allbirds has opened a permanent flagship store in New York this week. Located in Soho, the shop spans over 4800 square feet (approximately 446 square meters) and replaces the brand’s pop-up store in the city.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Allbirds makes footwear using sustainable materials such as merino wool and tencel, a patented tree fiber the company says requires 95 percent less water to produce. The shoelaces are made of recycled plastic bottles.

The store opening follows the announcement of actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio as an investor. “I am proud to join the company as an investor", said DiCaprio in a statement published last month.

Founded by New Zealand-born Tim Brown and San Francisco-based Joey Zwillinger, the company launched simultaneously in the US and New Zealand in 2014, solely as an e-commerce. According to Footwear News, Allbirds intends to launch stores in eight other American cities, including Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and Washington.
