Tiger, the quirky Danish retail brand, will be bringing their original aesthetic and affordable prices to the United States. On May 16th, they will open a 5,000-square-foot Flying Tiger Copenhagen unit that will feature items such as “Star Wars” umbrella and telescoping backscratchers. The store will open on Broadway and 21st Street, right in the heart of lower Manhattan. In addition to their quirky items such as “Star Wars” paraphernalia, they will also feature sunglasses, tote bags umbrellas, scarves, hats, t-shirts, and tops.
The brand’s aesthetic is all about the youth. “There’s a lot of stuff for your eight-year-old, but we’re really directed toward your inner eight-year-old self,” Tina Kanter, Managing Director of Flying Tiger Copenhagen was quoted saying to Women’s Wear Daily. Many of Tiger’s basic necessity products are done in a way that will remind you of your childhood toys. For example, their oven mitts have teeth and their mugs have moustaches on them.
It’s almost like being in a grown-up toy store for your basic necessities. Many accessories in the collection are emblazoned with the word “kaerlighed” on them, which means big hug in Danish. Tiger will bring a very fresh and lighthearted take to home stores that will surely set it apart from its competitors in NYC’s Flatiron neighborhood, so, Restoration Hardware and Design Within Reach better watch out.
Tiger opening Flatiron location
In America the brand operates under the name Flying Tiger Copenhagen in order to avoid any trademark issues. Kanter is responsible for spearheading their U.S. expansion, so, they won’t just be stopping at Flatiron. She has discussed the possibility of potential stores opening in the future as they are currently scoping out locations for future stores on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and the Meatpacking District just to name a few. Flatiron will be their flagship store, so, it’s New York’s new go-to destination for home goods that speak to our childhood selves.
What will help make this store so popular are the prices, prices range anywhere from less than 3 dollars for socks to less than 30 dollars for handmade blankets. Another unique aspect to Tiger is that 90 percent of their products are designed in-house. When you have such unique products at a great price don’t expect the prices to get any lower, though. The store doesn’t plan on running any promotions or discounts, sorry bargain shoppers.
According to Tiger’s website, last year about 3 Tiger stores were opened every week. They have 429 locations in 27 European countries and Japan. Their highly accessible prices and imaginative design aesthetic are sure to be a welcome addition to New York’s retail scene.
