Eyewear brand Diff expands into physical retail with new Charleston location

US eyewear brand Diff Eyewear has entered a new chapter of growth with its first standalone retail location on King Street in Charleston, South Carolina, which opened on October 10, 2026.

The launch marks the brand's foray into physical retail following a decade operating primarily as a direct-to-consumer (D2C) e-commerce business and wholesale distributor. Diff plans a measured expansion rollout of 30 additional locations over the next three years. A second location in Tampa Bay, Florida, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2027.

“Physical retail stores are a natural next chapter for Diff,” said chief executive officer Bob Ross. “Over the last decade, we've built a deep understanding of our customer through our .com feedback, especially how she defines her style and appreciates the ability to edit an outfit.”

Immersive retail concept and wholesale distribution

Designed by cultural anthropologist Phil Otto, former creative designer for Urban Outfitters and REI, the store concept features an immersive art exhibit and on-site eye exams. The aesthetic utilizes a futuristic palette inspired by eyewear materiality and shapes.

The brand's core e-commerce business, which offers prescription and sun frames alongside 24 licensing partnerships, has achieved annual compound growth of 20 percent since its founding in 2014. Meanwhile, Diff's wholesale channel is projected to reach over 3,400 doors in 2027. This includes approximately 700 department store locations across Nordstrom and Dillard's, alongside more than 1,000 specialty and fashion boutiques.

Additional growth channels and retail expansion

Diff also announced upcoming retail partnerships, including exclusive collections across more than 1,200 Target doors. These launches include a limited-edition 'Emily in Paris' capsule in December 2026 and a Diff LT sunglass capsule in January 2027.

In January 2027, Diff will begin servicing 500 independent eye care practitioner doors across the country, transitioning from a former licensee to internal management of its optical wholesale operations.

In conjunction with the store opening, the company is partnering with charity organization Vision To Learn to provide eye exams and medical vision access to children in local schools.
