US department store Macy’s is due to close a further 14 locations this year as part of its ongoing ‘Bold New Chapter’ transformation strategy.
The additional store closures were confirmed in a memo to employees from chairman and CEO Tony Spring, seen and reported on by WWD.
In the note, Spring said: “In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations.”
The latest stores due to close include Fox Run, Newington, NH; Livingston, Livingston, NJ; Marley Station, Glen Burnie, Md.; Boulevard, Amherst, NY; Crossroads Center, St. Cloud, Minn.; Rivertown Crossings, Grandville, Mich.; West Valley Mall, Tracy, Calif.; Pittsburgh Mills, Tarentum, Pa.; La Palmera, Corpus Christi, Tex.; Northlake Mall, Atlanta; Triangle Town Center, Raleigh, NC; Grossmont, Las Mesa, Calif.; Interstate, Ramsey, NJ; and Budget House, Tukwila, Wash.
Spring added that the company has communicated with impacted employees, and is providing support, including transfer opportunities where available, as well as leverage and outplacement resources.
The latest planned store closures build on wider plans to shutter around 150 Macy’s locations, with 350 sites to remain. A further 125 stores will be “reimagined” with the goal of improving merchandising and implementing fresher products. A total of 66 stores closed in 2025.
Spring added that the Bold New Chapter strategy, which initially launched two years ago, is maintaining the mission of investing in customer experiences, simplifying operations and strengthening stores.
“Today, that work is centred on disciplined execution and continuous improvement, with strategic investments that are guided by what customers value most,” he continued.
