The man behind the “Brooklyn Birkin” has announced he will open shop in New York City this year. That’s right, Telfar Clemens, the designer behind his namesake label Telfar, announced on The Breakfast Club that a brick-and-mortar store will be coming to New York City later this year. Telfar’s shopping bag totes have helped build the brand into the monolith it is today, and arguably one of the most successful independent brands in America right now. The shopping totes are known to sell out within a matter of minutes once they drop online.

Clemens recently showed his latest collection at New York Fashion Week, featuring new bags, performance wear, denim, and tops in a variety of colorways. If the planned brick-and-mortar store is anything like trying to shop his products online, expect there to be both a line and a waiting list for the coveted handbags. The brand is continuing to build out its wardrobe essentials to expand beyond their accessories category.

Accessories continue to be their bread and butter, as Clemens won the 2020 CFDA Award for Accessories Designer of the Year. He also recently debuted a new handbag, the circle bag, which was met with controversy over having a higher price point than his other accessories, but still sold out.

The location of the planned store has yet to be announced. It is possible that Telfar will join the ranks of other comparable luxury brands and open in SoHo, or they could stay true to their “Brooklyn Birkin” identity and open a store somewhere in Williamsburg near other fashion shops.

“Telfar and the team are so grateful for the overwhelming support surrounding Telfar brick-and-mortar,” A representative for Telfar said to FashionUnited. “While the store opening was hinted at, there are quite a few moving parts and no formal commentary to share as of yet. Further details can’t be disclosed at this stafe.”

Last year, Telfar also launched Telfar TV, the brand’s own TV station that serves as a “24-Hour Live-Linear TV network” as a hub for all their product drops. Telfar has also hinted at other upcoming brand collaborations, including one involving a Telfar backpack. The designer has previously collaborated with White Castle, Converse, Moose Knuckles, and Ugg.
