The 15 Percent Pledge, an initiative that attempts to give products from Black-owned businesses 15 percent of shelf space at retailers, has now added Gap Inc. to its list of partners. The 15 Percent Pledge has adapted to accommodate companies who don’t carry outside brands but want to diversify their workforce.

The 15 Percent Pledge was launched by fashion designer Aurora James, founder of Brother Vellies, wanted to expand the project to allow companies that aren’t multi brand to bring more diversity to their employment ranks. While the organization is still focused on increasing shelf space for Black businesses, they still want as many companies as possible to be part of the conversation and commitment adapting it as necessary.

Gap Inc. is seeking to leverage its relationships with colleges and universities to expand their number of Black interns. The company also has plans to double its Black and Latino workers at its U.S. offices. Gap’s overall U.S. workforce is 18 percent Black, however 20 percent of store employees are Black while only 4 percent of headquarters employees are Black.

In addition to their Gap flagship brand, Gap Inc. also owns Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta. While change won’t be immediate, Gap Inc. is hoping joining the 15 percent pledge will put them on the right path in aiding with racial equality.
