The fair’s third and final phase brings more than 12,000 exhibitors to Guangzhou. For fashion buyers, the test is whether that scale makes it easier to compare products, assess new ideas and build useful supplier relationships.

Marking the 70th anniversary of its founding, the 140th Canton Fair Autumn Session runs its third and final phase, themed “Better Life”, from 31 October to 4 November. The phase covers 515,000 square metres and 25,000 booths across five sectors and 21 exhibition sections. More than 12,000 companies are taking part across fashion; home textiles; toys and children, baby and maternity products; office supplies; and health and recreation. For fashion buyers, the issue is whether a large marketplace can make comparison, discovery and supplier contact more productive.

On the floor, that value is built through direct encounters and hands-on trials. Buyers handle samples, compare details and ask exhibitors how products might fit different markets. At an outdoorwear booth, an Australian buyer told FashionUnited that this was her third Canton Fair and that Phase 3 was her priority. She praised the range of categories, the number of new products and the breadth of sourcing choices, while also highlighting easy communication, convenient sourcing and the fair’s on-site services.

Just as important, she said, was the chance to speak with suppliers, customers and peers from different countries and markets. Those conversations reveal fashion trends and practical product details. She said she enjoyed returning to China for the event and would recommend it to other Australian buyers. For her, scale means more products to compare and more people to learn from in one trip.

The fair’s growth gives those encounters historical context. According to the official overview, the event has expanded from 9,600 square metres and 1,200 buyers at its first session to 1.55 million square metres today; the 139th session drew 314,000 overseas buyers onsite. That scale creates a different challenge: helping buyers find relevant suppliers in a much broader offer. For fashion exhibitors, it means making materials, practical design details and intended use easy to assess. Adjacent displays let buyers compare apparel, footwear and outdoor products in one visit.

As the fair continues to expand in scale, the Canton Fair has long since outgrown its role as a pure trading platform. Overseas buyers' interest in China has gradually extended beyond the products themselves to technological innovation, service experience and the broader market environment.

One South American buyer admitted that, beyond sourcing suitable suppliers, China's cutting-edge high-tech products and supporting services had left a deep impression on him. After the fair closes, he plans to take his family to visit other cities in China. For him, the Canton Fair is not only an opportunity to find suppliers, but also a window to observe China's innovation and development up close.

This extension — from product sourcing to market understanding — also sets a higher bar for exhibitors.

For the apparel industry, competitiveness no longer rests on manufacturing capacity alone. Material choices, practical design details, and whether a product's intended use is clearly communicated — all of these determine whether an item makes it into a buyer's sourcing mix. New-product discovery is part of the response. The official briefing lists about 190 New Collection events planned for Phase 3 and more than 700 across the 140th session. Booth-level navigation supports sourcing on site, while online matching and trade services can continue conversations after the fair. Neither replaces examining a garment in person. Seventy years on, the fair’s fashion offer is most useful when its size becomes access: to products, people and a sharper reading of what international buyers may want next.
