One of the most major events on the fashion calendar has announced their theme for 2016. "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" was revealed to be the next theme by Vogue on Tuesday, October 13. The next Met Gala exhibit will focus on the intersection of technology and hand-made haute couture.

“Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made,”Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, was quoted saying to vogue.com. “But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.”

The exhibit is expected to feature 100 pieces of fashion, including not only haute couture, but ready-to-wear as well. Priceless hand made couture items will be featured alongside machine made designs created with techniques like laser cutting, circular knitting, and thermo shaping. The exhibit will also feature 3-D printing.

With Karl Lagerfeld recently doing a collection of 3D printed couture dresses for Chanel earlier this year, the intersection of fashion and technology has never been stronger. Hermes also recently released their Apple watch collaboration to rave reviews.

Next year's Met Gala will be co-chaired by pop star Taylor Swift, actor Idris Elba, Apple Inc. Chief Design Officer Jonathan Ive, and American Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Louis Vuitton Creative Director Nicholas Ghesquiere, Miuccia Prada, and Chanel Art Director Karl Lagerfeld will serve as honorary chairs, and the event will be sponsored by Apple.
