London - Benetton has become the latest retailer to pledge that it will ban angora products less than 24 hours after animal rights group Peta staged a multi-pronged campaign at the fashion brand, including a protest outside of its flagship store on Regent Street, London.

The Italian clothing brand has confirmed that it will ban angora across its approximately 6,000 stores worldwide, saying: "Benetton Group confirms the decision to stop using angora wool in all its collections sold around the world.”

The retailer follows other big name fashion brands including Zara, Lacoste, H&M, Marks and Spencer, Primark and Topshop who have already banned the use of the rabbit fur over the past year.

"By committing to ending the use of angora wool in all of its future collections, Benetton has done the right thing for animals and consumers,” said PETA director Mimi Bekhechi. "Angora production is cruel, and PETA urges the few remaining retailers still selling this vile product to learn from Benetton's experience and show the public that cruelty to animals has no place in their stores."
