Why is Fashion Nova all over our Instagram feeds?

Los Angeles-based label Fashion Nova has risen to popularity thanks to viral posts on Instagram, where more than 14 million users follow the brand. With celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Cardi B swearing by it, Vox listed the reasons why the brand founded in 2016 by Richard Saghian has become so popular.

Modest fashion on the rise

While instagrammers double tap Fashion Nova’s revealing outfits, other customers are looking specifically for brands that are all about covering it up. Forbes Magazine delved into the trend of modest fashion this week, featuring an interview with Ghizlan Guenez, founder of modest fashion e-commerce The Modist. The interview was inspired by an upcoming exhibition on contemporary muslim fashion to be held at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.

Victoria’s secret failing to get with the times

It’s no secret Victoria’s Secret is struggling. The lingerie brand best known for its team of model ambassadors wearing angel wings seems out of touch with today’s movement towards inclusivity and body positivity, which has been causing sales to drop. Consumers seem more attracted to brands like Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty, which celebrate diversity. Victoria’s Secret latest fashion show, held on November 8, featured many models of color, but nothing changed in terms of body size. To add insult to injury, the label’s Senior Creative, Edward Razek, said transgender models shouldn’t be included in their fashion shows because they are supposed to be “a fantasy”. The brand's CEO, Jan Singer, resigned less than a week later. Victoria's Secret complicated situation has led The New York Times to reflect on the company’s mistakes in an article titled “Victoria’s Secret Is Trying to Change with the Times. Or is it?”.
