The year was 2003. Vogue and CFDA came together to launch the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, with the first winner Proenza Schouler crowned the following year.

The impact of the fund cannot be underestimated. It created fashion stars – Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Rodarte, Prabal Gurung, Phillip Lim, Public School and Telfar among them – and, in the process, shifted the American fashion culture by putting a spotlight on emerging talent. It inspired several other similar programs as we all look to build a healthy future generation in fashion.

This year marks an especially significant one for the program—the 15thanniversary.

The idea was born from the tragedy of 9/11 when fashion week came to a halt and threatened to put many young designers out of business.

To mark the occasion, Vogue featured a special shoot in its November 2018 issue, on newsstands now.

Photographer Mikael Jansson captured some of the past winners with models Imaan Hammam and Kendall Jenner bringing the garments to life.
