Who is hiring in fashion in Japan?

International brands make up a large share of current vacancies: Nike, adidas Group, Puma, Skechers, Columbia Sportswear, VF Corporation and luxury houses under Richemont (Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Piaget) all recruit here, largely for retail, design and Japan/APAC head-office roles.

Domestically, Fast Retailing — the Uniqlo, GU and Theory group — is by far Japan's largest fashion employer, and its retail and head-office operations anchor much of the domestic hiring, alongside major retail and design groups such as Onward Holdings, World Co. and Beams. Why Japan hires

Japan's edge is scale concentrated in a handful of groups rather than spread across a big domestic industry: Fast Retailing alone generated consolidated revenue of ¥3.4 trillion in the year to August 2025, with Uniqlo running 2,519 stores worldwide (Fast Retailing) — a figure equivalent to roughly 40 percent of Japan's entire ¥8.5 trillion domestic apparel retail market (Yano Research Institute). That imbalance is the point: a small number of Japanese companies operate at genuinely global scale, while most other hiring sits with international brands running their Japan or Asia-Pacific business out of Tokyo.

Domestic apparel manufacturing has shrunk as imports, mostly from China, now cover most of what's sold in Japan. That has pushed hiring toward design, brand management, merchandising, luxury retail and materials/textile specialism — areas where Japan's design heritage and technical trims industry (zippers, technical fabrics, premium denim) still carry global weight even as garment production itself has moved offshore.

Can you get a fashion job in Japan?

There are two realistic routes in, and language ability decides which one applies:

• Specialist and design roles. Foreign nationals can be sponsored for design, product development, brand and international-business roles under the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, which explicitly covers fashion design and product development drawing on non-Japanese expertise.

• Japanese-language retail and office roles. Most retail, merchandising and customer-facing positions expect business-level Japanese; as of April 2026, smaller employers sponsoring language-using roles under the Engineer/Specialist visa must also show the applicant holds JLPT N2 or an equivalent B2-level certificate. Applying from abroad still requires a Japanese employer to sponsor the visa before you can start work.
