The lady known for her infamous splits and cartwheels at fashion shows has decided to give those who make doing splits and cartwheels part of their profession some more fashionable offerings. Betsey Johnson is launching a line of dance wear in collaboration with Capezio debuting July 1. Capezio's new brand ambassador, Maddie Ziegler, who Johnson met when she was a Dancing With the Stars competitor in Los Angeles, will model in this summer's Betsey Johnson for Capezio campaign.

Johnson herself is a former dancer, having practiced ballet throughout and various other forms of dance throughout her life. Back in the 60s she actually freelanced for Capezio. Johnson fondly refers to her own style as "take a leotard then add a skirt."

Johnson's line for Capezio will retail between 20 dollars and 120 dollars. Her designs will include nylon spandex leggings, briefs, camisoles, leotards, graphic printed t-shirts and tutus. Of course, all the designs will have more than their bit of Betsey Johnson flair, with prints such as florals, stripes, and bursts of hot pink as part of the aesthetic of the collection.

While the deal is only set for the short term, but could be extended depending on how well sales go, Johnson told WWD the one thing she was sure about was the design. "The one thing I wanted it to be from the start was iconic — so lots of roses, cherries and rock ’n’ roll motifs — and tutus," Johnson explained. She already has plans for her fall runway show to include models wearing Capezio flesh-colored leg wear and she is also considering having dancers as part of the lineup.

For the woman who just recently accepted the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the CFDA, she seems poised to create a collection that will leave many impressed. As one of the most iconic designers to grace the New York fashion scene, Johnson shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This new line with Capezio is just an added jewel to her eternal crown in the fashion spotlight.
