Patagonia has enjoyed 20 long and successful years in New York City. To celebrate their 20 years in the Big Apple, the brand has relocated from their 101 Wooster Street location in Soho to 72 Greene Street, also in Soho. The new location is expected to be distinctly more New York.

Their new space is an impressive 14,000-square-feet and has plenty of environmentalist touches. Patagonia has 131 stores globally, Patagonia averages 12 annual openings, with their latest openings being international with a new store in Coyhaique, Chile, and another store in Mt. Dobong, South Korea. The brand also has plans for a pop-up store near rock climbing in Ogawayama, Japan.

Currently, they have four stores in New York after having opened their first store on Wooster Street in 1995. As part of the brand's commitment to sustainability, their new location features a work station where employees can repair pre-owned Patagonia products. The work station is an offshoot of Patagonia's Worn Wear initiative, which fixes thousands of items globally each year to prevent them from ending up in landfills.

The new location also has a 3,500-square-foot community workspace where non-profit organizations and environmental groups can hold meetings. Free weekly yoga classes are also held in the space every Sunday. Robert Cohen, Vice President of Global Retail for Patagonia said to WWD that, "The one thing I can guarantee is that we will be inviting the community to come in and do more than just shop.”

The interior design of the store is also very original and impressive. Reclaimed long-leaf pine from the Domingo Sugar Refinery was used for tables, fixtures, and beams. Marble and pavers used in the Museum of Modern Art's sculptural garden before it was renovated ten years ago were repurposed for the stairways and walkways.

Brooklyn-based Haptic Lab has also designed also designed six hand-stitched quilts that replicate famous climbing routes and topographical maps. Shoppers can currently pick up a copy of Patagonia's new zine if they go into the store as well, respectfully titled Living and Breathing: 20 Years of Patagonia in New York City. The zine features an interview with Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario and climber Lynn Hill Patagonia.

After 20 years, Patagonia has solidified its place in the New York City retail scene in its own unconventional way. Amidst a sea of high-end luxury brands in Soho like Burberry, Chanel, and Prada, they made a name for themselves as a brand with quality outdoor apparel. It's been a successful 20 years for them, and they seem poised to continue to enjoy a successful future.
